Things I Learned From Karaoke

karaoke

1. I love to listen to people sing, even if it’s badly and in large drunken groups. I like being part of their good time.

2. Sometimes drunk people don’t understand how karaoke works: They put a song in and disappear. They climb onstage every five minutes. They request songs.

3. I like it when black people sing soft rock and country and white Penn kids try to rap. That’s my contribution to MLK day, as trivial as it may be.
4. Vern, Godiva, Nicole, and Mac. They are already my favorites. Vern sings Air Supply, Christopher Cross and Journey and is a fantastic beatboxer. Godiva sits down at the edge of the stage to sing Mary J Blige’s “No More Drama.” Nicole interprets Pat Benatar’s “Love is a Battlefield” as West Philly soul sister. Mac makes me appreciate Garth Brooks.

5. If my equipment does not work, strangers will try to help, and then check on you to see if you are okay.

6. What I love about Philadelphia: people will call you on your bullshit and then lend a hand when you need it.
