This kid is totally related to me, whatever his name is. That is how I spent Saturday night to about 7:00 tonight.

More nephew pics. I will put something other than babies when I get my digital camera from my Dad. It will not be nice.

Her Love Is Real

Cathy’s pics from Plain Parade’s Friday show of Edie Sedgwick and Hott Beat

I’m really glad this show did well because these are my favorite kinds of shows to do, but the most difficult when you’re not just doing a straight indie rock band show. Who is the market for it and how do you reach them?

Sadly, Wang Newton played to almost no one but I’ve decided my fave drag kings are Asian men with pencil thin mustaches, pompadours, and red suits singing Wayne Newton karaoke. Hott Beat’s lead singer was like a hyper insane version of Allison Wolfe in a scary cardboard mask, like puppet mall chick. The keyboardist was described by Edie as “the Bach of electroclash.” Edie also described Porktamer as The Enterprise. Cathy’s pictures pretty much say it all about Edie. I ended up watching the videos of Molly’s lips, Martin Sheen’s freakouts, and balls of fire of celebrity.

My childhood friend Dave was there, and 1985 me and 2006 me met and got along famously. I’ve known Dave since we were babies. Our Moms went to art school together and taught school and left within months to have us. There are jillions of leatherbound Kodaks of us with long bangs hugging, smiling. We look like brother and sister. In the early 80s he moved onto my block and we formed a gang of Jew freaks and geeks riding in Wendy’s Firebird, meeting in parents basement garages, the woods, looking for sex, drugs, magic, drum solos, who the fuck knows. One of those years I lapsed into a depression and never really came out and it was blamed on teenage braces. There was no language for manic depression besides Jimi Hendrix records. The insides of my mouth still taste like metal. Dave went off to college and lived all over the fucking place, well, places I haven’t: Ithaca and Florida and Las Vegas. I hadn’t seen him in over a decade and now he’s back after a rather interesting life. I’m often afraid to look up old friends who have disappeared because they remind me of a past me that I’m ashamed of, but Dave always makes me smile. I want to hug him and not let go. Not for romance, but for broken leatherbound photo albums filled with Kodaks of long bangs and oranges only made in the 70s. I wish it on both of us.
